Weeks 17 & 18: It’s a… Granny!

The last two weeks have just been crazy: first, we went to Ras Al Khaimah for a short staycation at the Banyan Tree Al Wadi, a beautiful resort in the desert that I can only recommend.

Birthday at Banyan Tree Al Wadi

Birthday at Banyan Tree Al Wadi

It was a surprise for my birthday and an absolutely amazing experience – my first desert adventure since we have arrived in Dubai over one year ago!! Well, it would have been even more perfect if, oh, if we had not started our staycation with a doctor visit. Yup, on my birthday, Luca woke up with fever… It would also have been more romantic if little L had not started vomiting everywhere as soon as we entered the beautifully decorated villa… And, maybe, it would  have been a bit more relaxing if we had not been supposed to move apartments just after our trip to the desert. But hey… we still went away for some days and we truly enjoyed it!

Birthday at Banyan Tree Al Wadi

As soon as we came back to Dubai however, the real craziness started. Packing boxes for the move until late at night, moving apartments with a sick toddler, unpacking boxes in the new apartment, searching for this and that (“I am sure it is in a box – but which one????”)… I thought moving countries with a 3-month-old baby was a challenge. But, you know what – moving flats with a coughing, sneezing and tired toddler is also an unforgettable experience! Add the emotional ups and downs of a pregnant woman and – voilà, you get the picture haha:-) Nevertheless, it was all so worth it. We are super happy in our new apartment. Especially Luca! He has a bit more space than in the previous one and some adorable play corners!

With so many things going on during the last weeks I nearly forgot that I was pregnant! Especially during the moving phase my husband consistently needed to remind me not to carry heavy stuff, not to climb on unstable ladders etc. So, I am enjoying writing a bit about little Miss M today. It is nice to spend some time thinking about her and about how she is doing in my belly. I hope that she has not been too affected by the last weeks’ hurly-burly and the sleep deprivation…

The symptoms I am supposed to have in weeks 17 and 18 (and how I am really feeling)

  • Increased tiredness: Yes, definitely! But I can’t tell if this is due to the pregnancy or the move and the fact that little L is waking up several times at night at the moment because of his cough….
  • Increased need to pee: No, not really. Maybe a bit more during the night. But that’s it. But then again, you don’t want to run to the bathroom every few minutes with a toddler watching you haha
  • Stomach ache: No, thankfully not! At least nothing that is worth mentioning.
  • Nosebleed: No?! Is this a common thing? Never heard of it…
  • Stronger and healthier hair and nails: Not sure about the hair (it is still as straight as usual…😦 What about the changes in hair structure a pregnancy is supposed to cause?? No sign of a single wave or a bit more volume for now…) but I can confirm that nails are definitely growing faster than usual. They look pretty decent as well. So, I can avoid nail polish, which is an advantage as the latter is not super healthy during pregnancy anyways (if you want to use nail polish, try to find some without dibutyl phthalate or DBP).

Little Miss M
Miss M is now as big as a bell pepper! She is growing super fast! I’ve read that she still had plenty of space to move around and, apparently, she’s enjoying this😉 I can definitely feel some tiny little movements now – like little bubbles. Apparently, second-time mums can recognize them earlier than women that are pregnant for the first time. Honestly, I don’t remember exactly when I started feeling Luca’s movements in my belly… It might have been a bit later, indeed. I just remember that I loved feeling little L kick my belly from the inside and move around – and so do I now. It is somehow reassuring to feel “something”. It helps create a connection with the baby. I truly hope that Miss M is doing well. That I have not carried too much during the move or been too stressed. Cause, apparently, this can affect the fetus as well… Well, I will try to get some rest this week, now that the super busy moving phase is nearly over😉

This week’s topic

It’s a…. Granny!!
When we found out that I was pregnant again and when I started to get quite bad morning sickness, my husband and I suddenly realized that we might need some kind of help. During my pregnancy (especially during the last months) but also when the second baby will be here.

First, we needed a very quick solution as I was vomiting and not feeling well during the first three months of my pregnancy. Chasing a toddler when feeling unwell is not an easy job as every mum can probably confirm😉 Nursery seemed to us like a good solution. So, little L started going to Toddler Town in JBR three afternoons a week. We had a quite difficult start (as you can read in my previous posts ). But after some weeks, Luca really started to enjoy spending time at the nursery. And it gives me some free time – to get stuff done without being interrupted or simply to relax a bit when I am feeling too tired. Of course, there are downsides: Luca is much more ill since he started nursery. That’s a fact. Apparently, kids need to go through this when they start nursery. To strengthen their immune system. Well, I would still prefer not to see him sick so often… But Toddler Town was definitely the right decision. I can only recommend it by the way. The principal in their JBR branch, Sarika, is one of the most caring and understanding persons I have met. She really loves working with kids and will listen to any concern you might have and reply to any of your questions.

Nevertheless, we knew from the beginning that we would probably need a bit more help towards the end of my pregnancy. For now, it is still easy to carry and to chase Luca. But will I be able to run around like this and lift him up in some months? And, more importantly, will I be able to be there for him 24/7 (cause this is what it is hehe) when carrying and caring for a newborn without going completely nuts? Probably not…

So, we started to seriously think about employing a supplementary helping hand. Maybe a live-in or a live-out nanny? Hmmm. I talked to other mums who already employ a nanny. Some of my friends were lucky enough to find “la perle rare” as we say in French. THE one. But I’ve also heard other stories. Unfortunately. That’s probably the risk when you get someone else to help you take care of your child. You might not be happy with the way they are doing it…

I knew it would be very hard to find someone. Cause I am very difficult when it comes to Luca. Well, probably every mum is. I just love him too much. My husband kept telling me that we had to accept the fact that we would not find a person who would do everything exactly the way we wanted it to be done. I, on the other hand, thought that, if we employed someone, this person should at least be willing to learn and to get to know Luca as a person – with special needs and his own personality….

We had not even really started our search for a nanny when I stumbled across www.granny-aupair.com. One mum shared her (very positive) experience in one of the Facebook groups. It’s like a dating site. Except that it brings families and (mostly German) “substitute” grandmas together. The concept is similar to the one of “au-pairs”, which is highly popular in Switzerland. But unlike young au-pairs, these grannies are more experienced, have raised their own children or even worked as teachers, nurses etc. before retiring. They still know what it really means to play with a child. To spend quality time with them. They have played with their children or grand-children themselves. I absolutely loved this idea!

logo

All of the grannies on www.granny-aupair.com want to take part in another family’s life for some time (from 1 month to 1 year or even longer) and most of them want to live abroad for different reasons (getting to know another country, another language, another culture etc). There is no salary paid as such but you can (should, I think!) give the grannies a decent amount of pocket money per month so that they can do some activities in their free time as well. Obviously, you need to provide accommodation (for us, it was clear that this would not be the maid’s room but rather the future baby’s room for the moment) and the granny will take part in your everyday life (meals, activities, restaurants etc.). Obviously, you would not expect the granny to work the whole day or do all the housework. Just like you wouldn’t expect your grandma to do this. I rather see it as some help with Luca. Some kind of temporary grandma! Such a lovely idea!! Especially as Luca’s “real” grandparents cannot come for a longer period of time. They are in Germany and Switzerland. Being quite close to my (today 95-year old and super smart) grandma myself, I’ve always wanted Luca to have this special experience as well. This special bond with the older generation.

So, we had a look at different granny au-pair profiles on the website. I got really excited! We decided to register and to create a profile. Even before being able to contact the grannies that we had pre-selected, we got a lot of contact requests! I was surprised. We organized some first Skype interviews, just to get to know some of the grannies better. Of course, you can never really know if there’s a perfect fit before really living with a person. But there seemed to be some sort of mutual understanding when speaking to some of them. I really liked the fact as well that these grannies were very open-minded and willing to live in another country, to discover another culture. This is really us. I like (and admire) the fact that they leave their life behind for some months to live with another family somewhere else in the world.

There was an obvious match with one of the grannies in particular. Not only does she speak German, French and English but we also seem to share the same opinions and have a similar character. So, we took the decision to try the “granny au-pair experience”! We will welcome her this week – I am really excited:-) I also think it’s great that she is already joining our family now. So, little L and our granny will have the time to get to know each other before Miss M arrives:-)

It will be a whole new experience for us to have someone living with us though. It’s the first time someone else will be sharing our daily life, participating in everything we do. It will be all new for us. But then, it will be all new for her as well. I’m sure it will bring us so many great moments and we will learn a lot from each other.

To be continued.

Must haves for Miss M
I’ve been nursing Luca until he was one year old. Until he stopped from one day to the next as the pregnancy hormones had apparently changed the taste of my milk… Hopefully, I will be able to do the same for Miss M – even if I can imagine that nursing a newborn with a toddler running around is not quite the same experience… Anyways, my nursing pillow helped me a lot when I started breastfeeding after my last C-section. If I am able to nurse Miss M, I will definitely use one again. Recently, I have discovered the My Brest Friend nursing pillow, which looks to me like the Ferrari (or Aston Martin😉 ) among all nursing pillows. It wraps around your body and even has a backrest that helps prevent sore back and neck. You can also put a water bottle and your phone in its very practical pockets – that’s amazing! I don’t know how many times I was trying to reach for one or the other when I was nursing little L! Definitely a must have – rather for mummy, I agree. But, at the end, if mummy is comfortable when nursing, little Miss M will certainly be comfortable as well😉

Guest post: Easy Mom & Me T-Shirt Fashion Tutorial

Since we have arrived in Dubai and since I am a mum, I have definitely got to know the real value of friendships. I am not a person who needs to have a lot of friends around to be happy. Just some few real ones. Some friends that stay close to you despite the fact that you are living thousands and thousands of kilometers away. Despite the fact that, as a mum, you are less available (you might even say, despite the fact that you have become a bad friend… Sometimes, I don’t call my friends for weeks and weeks – and I feel really bad about it…). Friends that don’t mind that you cancel Skype dates at the last minute. Because you’re baby is sick. And has just covered you in vomit. Well…

Real friends don’t care about that.

I am lucky enough to have found some new friends here in Dubai as well. Most of them are mums like me. I guess everyone needs people around that are at the same point in their life as you. Who understand. Every mum needs other mums around to exchange experiences. To be reassured. Someone who knows how difficult it is to be a mum sometimes. That there are days when you want to cry. When you think that you’re the worst mum ever. EVER. But also someone who motivates you. Who inspires you and maybe shows you another point of view from time to time. Someone who is there to laugh about all the crazy situations you live as a mum. Just some other mum who understands.

Jen is definitely one of my good friends here in Dubai. She never fails to inspire me. As a mum. But also in general. She is an American artist, designer, founder of Curating Oranges, wife and one of these mums that I truly admire. Because she is so different from me. I love spending time with people that give me the feeling to learn something new every time I see them. With whom everything is easy. No need to plan our next meeting. A message on Whatsapp is enough.

So, when I said that I would not have the time to write any blog post this week as we were going on a short getaway for my birthday and then moving apartments, Jen just sent me a guest post for the blog😉

She shared this great and easy Mom & Me T-Shirt Fashion Tutorial with me – and you. And trust me, when it comes to fashion, Jen really knows what she is talking about.

If you want to find out more about her (and her 15 month old muse named Ada), check out her Instagram account @curatingoranges.

Enjoy the read:-)

And, Jen, thanks so much!!

Easy Mom & Me T-Shirt Fashion Tutorial

A t-shirt and jeans are wardrobe staples for every toddler-chasing mom; they wash easily and require no thought regarding coordination prior to getting dressed. As much as I love fashion, my busy little girl doesn’t have the patience for me to try on a series of outfits before landing on one that is perfect. As hard as it is on my city girl soul, jeans and a tee is usually the answer. Here is a way to give new life an old tee and have a little fashion left over for your mini, too.

The Project:
A cropped T-shirt for mom and an infinity scarf (or snood) for your mini (perfect for boys or girls).

Tools:
You will need a comfy t-shirt and a pair of scissors

IMG_6631

  1. Lay your t-shirt on a flat surface. Make sure the seams are lined up straight and use your hand to iron it flat.
  2. Measure up from the bottom about 10 cm or 6 finger widths (this measurement may vary depending on how you’d like your shirt to fit, feel free to use your judgment)
  3. Cut a straight line from one side of your shirt to the other.
  4. Put the t-shirt on yourself (it will look fab with a pair of high wasted jeans or over your yoga clothes).
  5. Loop the remaining ring of fabric 2 times around your little to make a snood or infinity scarf. (Do keep in mind that on very young children such a thing could be a strangulation hazard and will require close supervision)

Week 16: Healthy Eating for Two

This week was all about a healthy pregnancy diet (and about not going crazy while organizing a move with pregnancy fatigue and a 1-year old in tow – but that’s another story😉 ). On Tuesday, I met with Andrea Balazs, a Dubai-based holistic fertility and pregnancy coach, a loving mummy of a 4-year old girl and simply an inspiring woman. I will tell you all about my afternoon coffee with her (we actually had fruit smoothies – much healthier!).

The symptoms I am supposed to have in week 15 (and how I am really feeling)

  • Nausea should be gone by now: Yes, definitely! I have started feeling better some weeks ago already. It’s funny how quickly we forget about the less comfortable sides of pregnancy – I can’t even remember how bad I was feeling due to the morning sickness I suffered from during the first pregnancy weeks. I’m just thankful that I am feeling better now:-)
  • Even more energy: Yes, I would say so. And with the imminent move, I really need it! I feel less tired in the evening, even though there are still moments during the day when I just want to lay down for some minutes and relax…
  • The baby bump  is now clearly visible: Well, I don’t think I need to talk about this anymore after last week’s post😉 Yes, definitely visible. People are even offering me their seats in the tram and metro (which is quite nice, I have to say!)
  • Heartburn: Hmmm, maybe. But rarely. I might feel some acid reflux after a big meal, especially when it was not very healthy (I try to avoid grassy food but sometimes you just don’t have the energy or time to cook… That’s when you opt for something quick – like Nando’s. I love Nando’s, and there is one just next to our building. But I promise, I keep it to a minimum)

Little Miss M
This week, we had the pleasure to see our little girl again (we have decided to do a short scan every month):-) I love these special moments when we can see her happily moving around in my belly and hear her heart beating. After the events of this week (Japan, Beirut and now Paris…), I really needed this today… It gives so much hope and positivity to see your little baby grow. Miss M is now about the size of an avocado – and she will double her weight in the next few weeks! We could see how active she is now! During the scan, she was even covering her face with her arms as if she wanted to say that she was not very pleased about being disturbed😉 Apparently, she also has the ability to suck her thumb by now – but we didn’t see that today.

This week’s topic

Eating for two – but not twice as much
Nowadays, most pregnant women know the obvious facts about a healthy and safe pregnancy diet: no sushi or raw/ undercooked fish and meat in general; no unpasteurized dairy products to avoid listeria; no seafood or fishes such as swordfish, shark and marlin and only limited amounts of oily fish such as tuna due to their high mercury levels that can harm the growing baby; only thoroughly washed vegetables as they might have been in contact with cat feces to avoid toxoplasmosis; no undercooked eggs or poultry to make sure salmonella bacteria are killed; no canned food (or only when you’re sure the can is BPA free); no alcohol, no cigarettes etc.… Well, the list is long…

So, we usually know what we shouldn’t eat. But how does a healthy, nutritious and balanced pregnancy diet look like? How can we optimize our baby’s development and future health through the food we are eating? These are questions that seem much more complex (and interesting) to me.

Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 11.17.18

So, I decided to meet with someone who can give me some useful nutritional tips and tell me what to eat during the next 5,5 months:-) There are several great nutritionists in Dubai but I was rather looking for someone who is specialized in pregnancy-related questions. Andrea Balazs is a fertility and pregnancy coach who has arrived in Dubai nearly 10 years ago. She accompanies pregnant women as well as women dealing with infertility problems through prenatal/postnatal yoga classes, health coaching sessions, as well as LoveYourBelly and Aviva Method workshops (check out her website for more infos). Teaching women how to live a more relaxed, healthier and happier life is her main aim – and a healthy diet obviously plays an important role here.

Andrea Balazs, Fertility & Pregnancy Coach, Dubai

Andrea Balazs, Fertility & Pregnancy Coach, Dubai

What I liked about Andrea is that she really knows what she is talking about as she had to deal with infertility problems herself. A healthier diet and the right form of exercises changed her life completely – today, she is a proud mummy of a little girl. We met this week and time went by so quickly! It is only when I had a quick look at my watch that I realized that I needed to pick up little L at the nursery.

Andrea told me that nutritional needs change according to your pregnancy trimester. I will obviously not be able to explain everything she told me in just one blog post, but I will try to share some of her top tips. Here you go:

First trimester:
Nausea, constipation, bloating are some of the very attractive terms that accompany the first pregnancy trimester😉 Here are Andrea’s tips to avoid or, at least, minimize them:

  • Bloating: Take the time to chew your food properly when you eat. Eat smaller portions and more often during the day. It might also be important to observe which food combinations cause bloating (for example, your body might not be happy with you combining carbs and protein).
  • Constipation: Andrea’s top tip to avoid constipation is flaxseeds and psyllium. You can mix natural yoghurt with whole flaxseeds (don’t take the milled ones) and dried prunes that had previously been soaked in water. Or simply put hot water on whole flaxseeds, let it stand for about 10 minutes, and drink it. You can also use psyllium husks, a natural fibre that will soften your stool. Add one tablespoon to a cup of herbal tea and drink it before going to bed. Both psyllium husk and flaxseeds are known to be safe during pregnancy. Nevertheless, you should always discuss your constipation issues with your doctor before taking anything to soften your stool, flaxseeds and psyllium included. Very importantly, you should also drink enough water when you take one or the other. Finally, rock melon is also great for constipation and provides vital nutrients as well.
  • Nausea: Try spirulina, a natural green algae powder (the organic one) that is high in protein and gives you the B-vitamins you need. You can mix it into water or add it to a veggie smoothie to relieve morning sickness. Overall, it is important to make sure you get enough vitamin B6 (good sources are for example avocado, sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts, bananas, dried fruit such as prunes, chicken, potatoes and lentils).

During the first trimester, you should also focus on getting enough iron and folic acid. Your doctor might even recommend taking supplements (Andrea suggests to take iron/folic acid supplements, if recommended, in between meals or before bedtime).

Folic acid is important for the development of your baby’s brain and nervous system. Iron is essential for the hemoglobin production in red blood cells. Great sources include all green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale (you could for example prepare a green smoothie) but also broccoli, red meat, chicken, fish, eggs and dried apricots (make sure you buy the ones without sulfur dioxide; meaning they should look rather brownish than orange).

You should also take sufficient amounts of the B-vitamin folic acid or folate as the latter can help reduce spina bifida (meaning the embryonic neural tube doesn’t close properly). Dark green leavy veggies, overnight soaked oats or any fortified cereals and lentils can provide the folic acid/folate you need.

Second trimester:
During the second semester, you should focus on calcium, which is essential for the development of your baby’s bones and teeth, as well as on Vitamin D, which facilitates the absorption of calcium, and Omega 3 fatty acids that boost the development of your little one’s brain.

While we all know that calcium can be found in dairy products and eggs, Andrea suggests replacing cow’s milk by almond milk (or any other nut milk) as it contains even more calcium and minerals. Alternatively, use almond butter, tahini or one teaspoon of sesame seeds per day (you can sprinkle them on your yoghourt). To facilitate the absorption of the calcium, you should spend at least 20 min in the sun every day. Even though this seems easy to do when you live in Dubai, it might actually be a bit of a challenge as the production of vitamin D is hindered by sunscreen. Supplements can be a good idea (always check with your gynecologist first).

Good sources of omega 3 fatty acids include wild salmon, flaxseed (use the whole ones and grind them yourself but always store them in the fridge after grinding), walnuts, as well as chia seeds.

The second trimester is also the ideal time to do some exercises as you have more energy and, usually, suffer less from morning sickness. To keep your blood sugar stable, it is however important to have some protein-rich food with every meal. This does not necessarily mean red meat or chicken. Eggs, nuts and seeds, almond butter, low-fat cheese, yoghourt and avocado are also great sources of protein. Andrea’s top tip: natural yoghourt with chia seeds or chia pudding (chia seeds mixed in almond milk with some honey). Another positive side effect of eating seeds and nuts such as pumpkin and sunflower seeds, as well as cashew nuts? They help minimize stretch marks. We like😉

Third trimester:
During the third trimester you might want to focus on food that gives you energy. While unrefined carbohydrates, such as wholewheat bread, brown rice, cereals and pasta are important during the whole pregnancy, your need might increase during the last months. By the way, unrefined carbohydrates are also an excellent source of fiber – and fiber helps prevent constipation, a problem that can reappear in the last trimester.

Vitamin K should also appear on your list of priorities during the last pregnancy months. It plays a key role for blood clotting and therefore is important during labor and for the healing process just after. Babies are by the way usually given a vitamin K injection just after birth to avoid too much bleeding. To make sure you get enough of this vitamin, Andrea recommends eating broccoli, kale, asparagus, kiwi and green beans to name but a few.

Now might also be the time of digestive problems, cramps and varicose veins… Here are Andrea’s tips to prevent or reduce them:

  • Digestive problems: To help digestion, drink chamomile tea before each meal.
  • Varicose veins: Eat plenty of food that is rich in vitamin C to prevent the appearance of varicose veins: citrus fruits, kiwis, berries, tomatoes and spinach!
  • Cramps: Cramps can be best avoided with food that is rich in magnesium, such as dark leafy greens (kale, spinach etc.), avocado, beans, yoghourt, banana and – you will like this one – a bit of dark chocolate from time to time. You might however need magnesium supplements if the cramps are too strong. Ask your doctor for advice.

Last but not least, you might want to prevent postnatal depression. Zinc can help you do just that. Make sure you get enough red lentils, beans, beef, as well as pumpkin seeds and cashew nuts:-)

Of course, it is important to include protein-rich foods, unrefined carbohydrates, vegetables and fresh fruits, as well as iron-rich foods in your meals during all three trimesters. They are all part of a healthy, balanced pregnancy diet. Andrea just wanted to focus on 2-3 key points for each trimester.

Must haves for Miss M:
Living far away from your family and friends means you take loads, no really, LOADS of pictures of your little ones to send them over. I know how sad our families are to miss all of Luca’s important milestones. So, I usually try to take pictures or even videos of everything he does.

I’m sure we will do the same for Miss M:-) (seriously, I don’t know how I will manage the space on my mobile with two kids – already with one, my phone tells me every second day or so that there is no more space left for new pictures…). So, these gorgeous milestone baby cards will be just right to capture our little miss’ milestones and memorable moments. Even for us, it is great not to forget when she smiled or rolled over for the first time.
