Weeks 12 & 13: The Panorama Test

FullSizeRender[2]

One might think that a second pregnancy is far less exciting than the first one (especially when they are that close). That you already know what to expect. That you somehow pay less attention to it. Well, yes and no. Maybe you do feel a little bit more relaxed about the whole situation because this feeling of not knowing what is coming next has disappeared – but then again, my second pregnancy has been completely different from my first one so far… And yes, maybe you do pay a bit less attention to it – simply because, as a mum, you don’t have time anymore to think that much about your unborn child when your toddler is constantly asking for you. But after all, expecting a baby is quite an unique and emotional experience – and, I think, it doesn’t matter if it is your first, second or seventh child.

This time, I want to share my experience with you. And while the experience of being pregnant might not be new for me, being pregnant in Dubai, with a toddler in tow, will be a totally new experience!

At the end of each week, I will give you a brief update, writing about

  • the symptoms I am supposed to have – and how I am really feeling
  • my baby
  • diverse topics linked to my pregnancy and just anything useful I have come across during the week
  • cool baby items I want to keep in mind for baby N° 2

Well, this week, it will be a quite long post because I will write about the last two weeks (just because I don’t want to skip week 12, which was a quite important week for us).

Symptoms

  • Belly starts to show: Hmm, well, let’s say, most definitely, yes! I feel that my belly is already much bigger than it had been at that stage during my first pregnancy. I can still fit in my usual trousers but it becomes more and more difficult.
  • Morning sickness weakens: Yes, thankfully! I don’t think I could have continued like that for one or several more weeks…
  • You feel more serene: Yes, I would say so – at least since the ultrasound scan I had at the end of week 12. Also because the risk of miscarriage is decreasing at the end of the 13th week.
  • You feel more thirsty: Yes and no. During the day, I constantly forget to drink. But during the night, I wake up several time, searching for the water bottle next to the bed… I’ll need to find a way to drink more during the day! Any suggestions welcome!
  • Increased sweating: Not for now – and I hope this won’t come at all!!

The little bean inside my belly

Apparently, you are now the size of a lime or a small lemon (although, you already feel much bigger!). Last week, both of us had a little photo shoot done and I have to say, you looked pretty awesome on the pics😉 You were already moving so much – playing with the umbilical cord, waving your little hand to say hello. Apparently, you were nearly 6cm long that day (Dr A tried the best she could to measure you from head to rump, but she needed some patience) – and I am sure you have even grown since that. But you will need to grow even more to be able to kick back when your older brother is kicking mummy in her belly. But let me tell you that he really doesn’t do it on purpose – it’s just that he doesn’t like it when mummy changes his diapers. Well, you’ll see, diaper changes are not the most pleasant thing to do. But you don’t need to worry about that for now😉

These weeks’ topics

Weeks
First of all, I should maybe explain what I mean when I write about weeks 12 and 13. Simply because for me, personally, the counting still doesn’t make much sense. And it confuses me all the time. Even though it is my second pregnancy. A pregnancy is measured from the first day of a woman’s last period rather than from the day she actually conceived. So, week 12, for example, means 10 weeks since the conception + 2. The reason why most doctors usually tell you that you’ve been pregnant for about two weeks longer than you actually have been is that it is much more difficult to know the exact conception date than the first day of your last period. Well, it is in most of the cases.

3-months ultrasound scan & Panorama test
At the end of last week (week 12), I went to see my doctor for the ultrasound dating scan. We were super excited to get a glimpse of baby N° 2 – although it was not the first time we would see the little bean inside my belly (in Dubai, scans are very common, maybe a little bit too common by the way). There were two good reasons for us to be excited:

First of all, this 3-months scan would tell us if everything was ok with the baby. It would also help establish a more accurate due date. Of course, the date you get at that point might not be 100% accurate. The baby will not necessarily come on the exact date that has been established just because it is supposed to come. Nevertheless, it gives an idea and helps you plan a bit. Especially when you live abroad – with a toddler in tow, a husband that travels frequently and no family around… Let’s say, you better plan ahead!

Second, we would finally get the results of the Panorama test that had been made about three weeks ago. The Panorama test is a simple blood test, without any risk for the baby, that screens genetic abnormalities (such as  Down’s syndrome). It also can, if you want to, determine your baby’s gender. We had already chosen to do this test when I was pregnant with little L and, despite the fact that there was no real concern, we wanted to do it for baby N° 2 as well. The decision weather or not to do such a genetic test is a very personal choice (but you should know that the test is not necessarily reimbursed by your insurance). I, personally, am a facts and figures person. I would always do this kind of tests as long as they don’t harm the baby. Nevertheless, I would recommend to anyone who considers doing the Panorama test to answer this question before taking a final decision: What would you do if you found out in week N° 12 that your baby had Down’s syndrome or any other genetic abnormality? And trust me, it’s a tough one to answer. But think of the implications of such a test first.

So, back to last week’s scan. First of all, Dr. A measured the baby’s length from head to rump (or bottom) to estimate the date of delivery. And well, glad we did that cause the date that was defined last Saturday is nearly a week earlier than the due date that had initially been calculated! Then, she measured the depth of fluid at the back of the baby’s neck to assess the risk of Down’s syndrome. I remember from my last pregnancy that the smaller the depth of fluid, the better it is. Thankfully, everything seemed to be ok:-) At the end of the appointment we needed to wait a long time before the results of the Panorama test could be given to us. It was quite hard to sit still and wait. Finally, we were told that there was a low risk of genetic abnormalities. Uff…. And we were told as well that it was a – Oh, yes, I didn’t tell you. We absolutely wanted to know the gender of the baby. I totally respect couples that don’t want to know it at all but I am way too curious for that. I would always want to know😉 I also don’t see the point in keeping the gender secret until the day the baby is born. Not because I want to paint the future baby’s room in pink or blue. Just because I want to bond with the little person that is living in my belly. I like to this person by his or her name. But then again, this is a very personal choice. So, what was I saying? Yes, Dr. A asked us if we wanted a girl or a boy. Honestly, we didn’t have any preference. In my husband’s family, there are only boys, so, I had already prepared myself for another boy. And if I thought about it, two boys would be great. They were that close and could play together and become best friends (ok, that’s the wishful thinking of a mum). But then, Dr. A told us that it was a little girl! Well, the test does obviously have a margin of error. But for now and until the scans prove the contrary, I can say: we are having a little girl!!!! So, please meet Miss M:

Must haves for Miss M

I have always used music to calm little L down when he was crying or couldn’t sleep. Even today, I would sing a song if he is grumpy or crying for no (obvious) reason. It does not always work – but most of the time it does. So, one of the first things that will be added to Miss M’s room is a musical doll. But I was looking for something else than the usual “twinkle twinkle little star” song. What if I told you that there is a Russian doll in beautiful Liberty fabric that does actually let you choose between retro tunes of the Beatles, Serge Gainsbourg and Edith Piaf? I’ve seen this beauty from Barnabé aime le café at the newly opened Caramel & Sun concept store in Marcato Mall. I can’t wait to put Miss M asleep to the unique melodies of Gainsbourg.

Week by Week

Expecting baby N° 2… I know that it will be completely different this time. This time, I will be a bit more relaxed (well, I am not saying that I will not be completely freaking out when the baby is actually coming BUT I should be able to remain a bit cooler during the months before that). I will not read every available “How to become a perfect mum” or “100000000 things you should know about your baby” book (but I will most certainly read Tracy Hogg’s “Secrets of the baby whisperer” a second time😉 ). I will probably not have the time to buy as many baby clothes or items for the new baby room as we did before Luca was born (we already had little L’s room fully furnished and decorated when I was about seven months pregnant!). And I can already tell you that, this time, I have serious problems remembering which pregnancy week I am in.

That’s why I thought I might just as well share my experience of being pregnant in Dubai with you. Week by week. That way, I will not forget my pregnancy weeks (hehe) and I might be able to share some interesting information. So, I will soon start with week 12:-) But first, let me rapidly guide you through my first pregnancy weeks, or months:

FullSizeRender-45

1st month:
Wondering why little L stopped nursing from one day to the next. Starting to worry. Trying everything. Reading on the Internet that one of the reasons can be that the mum is pregnant again. Thinking “no” in disbelief. Thinking again. Thinking “????????”. Running to the pharmacy buying three pregnancy tests (two in case one of them is not working, one just because I thought it was really cool as you can see the advancement of the pregnancy and I only saw this one after having bought the first two ones… well…). Reading that you should do the test in the morning. Being impatient. Deciding that it cannot be that important to do the test in the morning. Pregnant is pregnant. Deciding to do the test now. Getting a negative result. Thinking that it might be important to do the test in the morning after all. Waking up super early the next morning. Needing to go to the bathroom. Urgently. Forgetting to do the test. Thinking “Sh…sh…sh…” Hating myself for needing to wait another day. Putting the test on the toilet that evening. Thankfully remembering to do the test the next morning. Waiting for two minutes. Why are these two minutes always so long????? Getting a positive result. Having problems to breath. Doing a second test to be sure (and being happy to have bought three tests after all). Getting a positive result again. Feeling excited. Thinking of all the nice ways to announce the pregnancy to my husband. Deciding to keep the pregnancy for myself this time and to do some research on how to make a creative announcement. Searching “creative pregnancy announcement” on Pinterest. Sitting about 30min in the bathroom looking at different pregnancy announcement pics. Hearing my husband knock on the door. Opening the door. Squeaking “I am pregnant”!!!. Thinking “So much for the creative pregnancy announcement”. But feeling happy. Deciding to wait till the end of the third month to announce the pregnancy just as we did it for little L. Telling my husband that it is really important not to tell his mum just yet. Calling my own mum the next day to tell her….

2nd month:
Feeling good and happy to be pregnant again. Thinking that this pregnancy will be just as the first one: super easy. Thinking that nothing can go wrong as I was feeling perfectly fine until the end when I was pregnant with little L. Realizing that pregnancy N° 2 can be totally different from pregnancy N° 1… Starting to feel sick from one day to the next. Feeling sick in the morning. Well, it’s called morning sickness. But feeling sick at noon as well. And let’s not talk about the evening. Feeling sick at the supermarket. Feeling sick when preparing little L’s lunch (especially then…!!). Deciding that our little monkey can have jars from time to time. Feeling like the worst mum on earth. Feeling guilty. But feeling sick. Deciding that it is more important not to feel sick than not to feel guilty. Giving little L a jar. Realizing that little L caught a virus. Taking care of ill little L. Feeling tired. Catching the virus myself. Feeling even more sick. Realizing that this pregnancy might be a little bit different indeed. Trying to take care of ill Luca and myself. Begging my husband to help me a bit more. Hearing my husband say that we need some help. Deciding to start with the nursery. Feeling like the worst mum on earth again. Telling myself that I am not a bad mum but that I now have to think about what’s the best for both kids. Starting nursery. Seeing little L cry. Crying as well. Telling myself that this must be the pregnancy hormones already. Hanging in there. But feeling tired. And sick. Getting there after all. Seeing Luca getting used to the nursery. Feeling relieved. But tired. And sick.

3rd month:
Feeling sick. And tired. Oh, and sick. And tired. Thinking that I have the best husband in the world as he takes care of everything when he comes home while I literally collapse on the sofa (if you read this: THANK YOU!!!). Thinking that this sickness will never go away anymore. Reading that some women feel sick during their entire pregnancy. Feeling shocked! Reading that it should go away after the third month in most cases. Feeling a bit relieved. Wondering why on earth my belly is already showing when I nearly don’t eat anything. Basically living of spaghetti, zwieback and English breakfast beans (please don’t judge me… Only thing that would not make me vomit). Thinking that my abdominals must have somehow disappeared between pregnancy N° 1 and pregnancy N° 2. Thinking that my belly already looks way bigger this time. Wondering if I should start wearing pregnancy clothes already. Realizing that my last pregnancy was during winter time. In Switzerland. Abandoning this idea. Deciding to buy some large clothes instead (Zara has amazing ones!!!). Waking up one morning without feeling that sick. Waiting for the sickness to arrive during the day. Not feeling that sick anymore. Just tired. Not really believing it. Deciding to wait a bit longer for the sickness to arrive. Realizing that the sickness might not come back. Feeling relieved. And tired. And hungry. But above all happy, I guess.

So much for the first three months of my pregnancy. Excited to start with the weekly reports soon:-)

Today is the day to reveal my secret

Recently, I’ve been working on a new project. It kept me so busy that I hardly had time to update the blog or to do any activities with our little L. The project is only at the beginning but I can already tell that it will have a huge impact on my life, on our life as a family. It will be hard work. It will give me sleepless nights (it actually already does). And a lot of things to worry about. It will most probably drive me crazy from time to time as it will require me to work a lot – while taking care of little L. It will also be a huge change for Luca. And still: I couldn’t be more excited to share this project with you. I couldn’t be more excited to include this new project in my already quite busy schedule😉

Let me tell you about how it all began: A little bit before Luca turned one, I started thinking about working again. Not necessarily in a company, but rather starting a business on my own. I had long discussions with friends, we were brainstorming and there were great ideas coming out of that. I got really excited. It all sounded great. Starting a new business. From scratch. Making use of what I have learned about marketing, about communication and business strategy. Collaborating with interesting people. It all made sense. Luca would start to go to nursery some afternoons a week and we would most probably get a nanny (or granny – but that’s another story). I could also work at night, when Luca was asleep.

Then. Pause. Was it really the right time to do it? Luca would indeed need to be at the nursery or with a nanny/granny most of the time. How would I deal with not seeing Luca all of a sudden? How would he deal with it? What if little L became ill? It would also be a huge risk. Financially. There would be quite a huge pressure on me. Even though I would love it, it would not be easy. Would I be able to just forget about the business when I was spending time with little L? Would I be able to start a business on my own? Probably not. I would need partners. Oh, I had some great people in mind. But Dubai is unpredictable. Expats move. They don’t stay here forever. Finding a business partner who stands 100% behind this idea, who is willing to work hard and who is sure to stay in Dubai for some further years… not easy. It would also need to be the perfect match. In terms of personality, in terms of business competences. Well. It was not getting easier…

On the one hand, it all sounded so exciting and, for some time, I really thought I could make it work somehow. Deal with everything at the same time. Luca, the business. Everything. On the other hand, I had some serious doubts. I was not sure if I was ready to commit to such a huge new project. I really appreciate spending time with our little monkey. To be a full-time mum. I am really thankful to have the opportunity to see him grow up. The first years in a child’s life are the most important ones. They can actually have a huge impact on their whole life.

So, I decided not to do it. Not to start the business. Not to become a mumpreneur. Not for now. Not yet. It was not the right time.

Just when I came to this conclusion, something happened. Another new project was presented to me. One morning. Just like that. Another project that would be a lot of work as well. But just like that, I said yes. This time, I didn’t even think about the pros and cons. There were no doubts. I just knew that it was the best thing to do. For me. For our family. I just knew that we could make it work.

I’ve already been working on this project for some weeks now (well, it was not easy every day but I will come to that later) and I am quite pleased with the result so far. It just seems perfect to me. Already now. It was my little secret for the last weeks. But today is the day to reveal it. My new project. Our new project. For the rest of our lives ☺
